Dad: Hey, how you doin’?

Me: Hey Dad. I’m OK, how are you?

Dad: Good, good. I haven’t talked to you for a while, so I thought I’d call and check in.

Me: Yeah, it’s been a few weeks. How’ve you been?

Dad: OK. Hey, I’ve got a funny story to tell you.

Me: Yeah?

Dad: My father got kicked out of another nursing home.

Me: Oh no! Why?

Dad: He kept trying to hurt himself.

Me: Jesus! Is he OK?

Dad: Oh he’s fine! He was just being dramatic. But anyway, now he’s back in the psych ward. It’s been pretty funny.

Me: …

Dad: Anyway, what’s going on with you?

Me: Not much. I just had a job interview, so hopefully that’ll work out.

Dad: Good, good. OK, well.

Me: Yeah, it would be part-time but pay well, so I’m really excited about it.

Dad: That would be good. OK, well.

Me: So we’ll see. I’m just waiting to hear back –

Dad: OK well. Just wanted to check in and see how things were going.

Me: Well, everything is –

Dad: OK, well.

Me: I’m sorry about your father.

Dad: Yup, yup.

Me: How exactly was he trying to hurt himself?
